Are You Taking Good Care of Your Skin?

skinPreviously we’ve discussed avoiding certain behaviors like smoking and tanning if you want to avoid premature aging. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it is continuously exposed to light, heat, water, wind, and pollution, all of which will cause damage. The older you get, the less your skin is able to regenerate and repair itself, which is why people get fine lines and wrinkles as well as blemishes and other skin imperfections as they age. What can you do to take better care of your skin and avoid getting that damage?

It’s starts with taking better general care of yourself. Skin doesn’t just appear, it’s made cell by cell, and it has to have the right building blocks to make high quality skin cells. That means enough of the right food, water, and sleep. Here’s what Bancroft Feldman recommends:

Drink enough water - This is hugely important because dehydration affects both performance and appearance. Dehydrated people look older. Their skin is the opposite of “dewy.” Also, all drinks are not equally hydrating, so no matter how much you love coffee or soda, it’s much better for your skin if you switch out some of your sweet or caffeinated beverages for water or green tea.

Eat the right foods - Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and whole grains will give your body what it needs to heal and regenerate itself daily - which means you will look and feel better too. A poor diet can cause breakouts. Avoid eating processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats if you want a clearer complexion.  

Sleep - This is another important component of your health. Cell regeneration only takes place when your body is in the deeper stages of sleep, and you need to sleep an entire night to get enough to make that happen. Don’t skimp on sleep if you want to stay young looking.

Manage your stress - There are many healthy ways for you to cope with the stresses that happen in life. Some of these would include exercise, better organization, spending time with friends and loved ones or time off by yourself in solitude and quiet, and setting reasonable and manageable goals.

Moisturize - Using the right moisturizer for your skin type will make you look and feel younger. A good moisturizer will prevent or treat dry skin, improve your skin tone, and mask your skin’s flaws. It will also serve as a barrier to sun, wind, and pollutants, protecting your skin from many different kinds of damage.
