Do You Have Acne Scars?

Acne is a common problem and a tough one. It's hard to feel confident when your skin is plagued with acne flare ups and breakouts. Not only is acne hard when it's actively occurring, but it often leaves acne scars that cause people to feel permanently self conscious about their appearance. Why does acne leave scars, and what can people do about it?

What Are Acne Scars?

Acne scars are the result of healing of deep trauma to the skin. The skin tries to repair itself, but it is not always successful in restoring the skin to its pre-acne condition. Not all acne leaves scars, of course. Blackheads and whiteheads are much less likely to leave scarring, but inflammatory acne like cysts often does. This is because cysts involve deeper layers of skin, and the deeper the wound, the more likely it is to scar.

Acne forms when pores become clogged with dead skin cells, excess oil, and bacteria. Over time, clogged pores can become acne lesions. When these rupture (or are picked), the skin tissue becomes irritated and inflamed. The skin attempts to heal this inflamed tissue by producing more collagen. If the skin produces too much collagen, this will result in raised acne scars. If it produces too little, pitting is the result. The more acne a person has and the worse the acne, the better the likelihood there is of long-term scarring.

Who Is More Likely to Have Acne Scars?

Acne is not entirely something within your control. Genetics have a lot to do with whether you will suffer from acne. If you have family members who have acne scarring, it's more likely you will as well. If you do nothing to limit or treat your acne, you will be more likely to suffer scarring. Also, if you touch or pick at your acne, this will hamper your skin's healing process and will increase the likelihood of inflammation and scarring.

It's important to have a skin care routine that you stick to everyday. Keeping your skin clean will help keep bacteria at bay and prevent inflammation. Eating right and exercising is also important for overall health, including the health of your skin.

Can I Do Anything about My Acne Scars?

If you already have acne scarring, there are measures you can take to mitigate it. Skin peels and laser treatments are two viable options. Dermal fillers also can be injected into depressions in the skin to help smooth out its texture. Another treatment Bancroft Feldman offers is microneedling.

Microneedling is a process that punctures microscopic holes in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the production of cytokines and growth factors which improve lines, scars, skin texture, and pigmentation. Microneedling is a way to create controlled collagen production that can heal over the wound the original acne caused.
